Week 2 Term 4 S.T.E.M Summary

In week 2 of S.T.E.M. we stuck to the theme of the term by looking at one of major challenge areas in the world – food. With the younger students we looked at a specific area – challenges farmers face when making food. We thought about the types of things farmers might find challenging and then some solutions to those problems. Some of the incredible designs are below.

The older students looked at food related problems that appear in our current world and tried to find a problem that they could solve. This week focused on the research element including how to choose a good site, how to copy URLs to reference a site, and some of the important information we need when designing a solution. To help us we looked at a video that discusses elements of food security and harvesting.

A chicken wonder world that has a exercise location, feeding trays, and watering system to keep them cool.

A pest warning system that warns when pests are near and emits a sound to scare them away.

A vehicle that collects emissions from a wheat cutting tractor and coverts it into energy.

A wheat cutter that chops wheat and places it into the middle storage tank, followed by a sprayer that takes irrigates the water after.

A device that sprays water all over the crops from a central point, complete with a tank reservoir.

S.T.E.M. Summary Week 11 Term 2

In the last week of Term we had a little fun with genetics and an understanding of light and brains. We used the tests we had asked the parents to do to help see if there were patterns of genetic inheritance of colour blindness. The students did a colour blindness test and most of us who were colour blind also had parents who were colour blind! It showed that it was inherited. We then arranged some colours in shades to see how each of use viewed them and the older students then played around with some optical illusion worksheets. They found that our brains can trick us into seeing things that are not actually there. Both the younger and older students then watched a video which tricked our eyes into seeing the walls move. The link is here if you want to try it at home! 11 Mind blowing optical illusions (5 minute crafts): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcpliVYfEqk&t=280s.  Our lesson for the day was that the brain and eyes work together to help us see. Have a great holiday everyone! It’s been an awesome semester in S.T.E.M.
